Day 1: Old Westbury Gardens - Lavender by the bay -Patty’s Berries and Bunches Trip: New York, Long Island, Lavender Bay, Patty's Berries and Bunches Old Westbury Gardens Work on the estate began in 1903, when John Shaffer Phipps promised his British fiancée, Margarita, he would build her a home in the United States that resembled her family estate in Battle Abbey. And the estate was shown in many media, Scenes of the driveway and some of the ground floor interiors were used in the 1970 film Love Story to depict the family home of Oliver Barrett IV, played by Ryan O'Neal. Other movies filmed on the grounds include North by Northwest, The Age of Innocence, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), Wolf, Hitch, Cruel Intentions, 8MM, Bernard and Doris, American Gangster, and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. Scenes from the television series Royal Pains, Pushing Daisies and Gossip Girl also used the location in filming. It served as the inspiration for the Buchanan Estate featured in Baz Luhrmann's 2013 film adaption of The Great Gatsby by his wife and production designer Catherine Martin. Lavender by the bay: Located in East Marion, Lavender by the Bay is New York’s premier lavender farm and one of the largest in the USA. Rated by Country Living as one of the top six stunning lavender farms to visit in America. A family run farm, the farm owners have been growing the highest quality lavender on Long Island for over 15 years. The 17-acre lavender farm is home to over 80,000 lavender plants. Here, you’ll walk through magical fields of purple and experience lavender in its most natural form. Patty’s Berries and Bunches: Patricia DiVello is the daughter of Edward and May who be originally potato farmers on Long Island, New York. With humble beginnings, she now fills her 40-acre farm with over 24 different varieties of berries! Strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries grow alongside the endless fields of colorful blooms.
